Highlights success of Sharp OSA™ Development Platform, announces availability of new reliable production models
BOSTON, April 17, 2007 - At the AIIM / ON DEMAND Conference and Exposition Sharp Document Solutions Company of America (SDSCA) is redefining how the industry looks at the multifunction peripheral (MFP), highlighting the successful Sharp OSA™ development platform, with a growing suite of vendor applications that will be demonstrated at Sharp’s booth. Pushing the envelope even further, SDSCA is also showcasing its new lineup of production MFPs and enhanced color workgroup models.
Now shipping, Sharp’s new high-volume MFPs are built for heavy production in the large enterprise environment. The series supports Sharp OSA technology, a gateway platform for seamless connection to network applications via MFPs. Using Sharp OSA integration, Sharp dealers are able to personalize the MFP to the individual needs of customers’ businesses via a broad range of applications. Sharp and its developer companies will demonstrate those applications with a full array of document and device management tools designed to optimize MFP network performance and workflow while ensuring document security. Featured vendors demonstrating in Sharp’s booth will be developers Yahoo!, Microsoft, and Google.
“Sharp OSA technology has brought innovation back to the marketplace, turning the multifunctional peripheral into the multifunctional portal to the enterprise,” said Ed McLaughlin, President, SDSCA. “At AIIM / On Demand, we’re demonstrating how dealers can leverage a wealth of new applications from Sharp developers to solve business problems for their customers. We’re also showcasing our most complete line of products and security offerings, giving dealers the opportunity to service almost any environment.”
Sharp OSA Development Platform Gains Momentum
Sharp OSA technology allows businesses to use their MFPs to access enterprise applications, including document management applications, reporting functions and custom developed applications. Sharp OSA integration has grown significantly over the past year, supported by the enrollment of more than 70 developers in less than nine months. Sharp recently announced the availability of the Sharp OSA Marketing Program, which gives the developers an opportunity to drive increased sales through several co-marketing opportunities available from Sharp. At AIIM / ON DEMAND, Sharp OSA developers will showcase how their software integrates with Sharp® MFPs in a variety of vertical market applications, including financial, legal and healthcare, as well as enterprise and small business environments.
New Powerful and Reliable Production MFPs
At AIIM / ON DEMAND, Sharp is demonstrating its high-speed line of production MFPs, the company’s first foray into the high-volume monochrome MFP market. The MX-M850, MX-M950 and MX-M1100 combine reliability, durability and enhanced performance, offering impressive print and copier speeds ranging from 85 to 110 ppm. The MX-M850, MX-M950 and MX-M1100 feature a large 10.4-inch LCD panel for ease of operation and viewing, and incorporate Sharp’s Scan2™ technology that minimizes paper handling while maximizing performance and scan speeds.
Built for heavy volume, the new models offer enhanced engineering features including a developer cooling system to prevent excess heat buildup, a multi-feed detection sensor to identify misfeeds and a highly rigid frame for increased durability.
Enhanced Color Digital Imagers
Sharp’s impressive new MX-6201 and MX-7001 MFPs boast color speeds of 50 ppm and B&W speeds of 62/70 ppm. Based on Sharp’s award-winning MX color series design*, the MX-6201 and MX-7001 support Sharp OSA technology and incorporate Sharp’s Color Scan2 technology. These networked MFPs have the highest on-line paper capacity in their class--up to 6,600--and a 150-sheet document feeder. Users can print color or black and white files directly from a USB memory device such as a thumb drive.
Industry-Leading Security
Since MFPs are an integral part of the networked enterprise, organizations need to ensure that they are protected with the same or greater level of security as their PC’s.
As the first manufacturer to achieve an EAL4 (Evaluation Assurance Level Four) Common Criteria Security ranking**, Sharp offers the industry’s most comprehensive approach to MFP security across the widest range of products, ensuring that any customer can protect the confidentiality of intellectual property or financial data. With features such as encryption, overwrite and enhanced port management, Sharp’s security suite protects confidential information from the most sophisticated threats. The award-winning Sharp Data Security kit offers several layers of advanced security to help ensure that documents passing through the MFP remain protected.
To restrict access to the devices, Sharp’s MFPs can be enhanced with multiple security solutions such as IP/MAC address filtering, Secure Socket Layer (SSL Encryption), IPV6, and IPsec, to name just a few.

**Sharp received an EAL4 Common Criteria ranking in security, which is the most advanced level available in the industry. Common Criteria is the internationally recognized standard for IT security testing that is managed by NIAP. NIAP is a U.S. government initiative that aims to increase the level of trust consumers have in their information systems and networks through the use of cost-effective security testing, evaluation and validation programs. There are seven levels of EAL certification and EAL4 is the level that most companies require. EAL4 represents a significant increase over EAL3 by requiring that the product is methodically designed, tested and reviewed with security as a key focus.
